The Sudanese Bread Uprising

The bread uprising that lasted for nearly eight months (2019) led to the removal of president Al Bashir, and the creation of a new military council to run government affairs,

With this change a new political era began in Sudan.
The main reasons behind such political changes is attributes to the shortages of bread in public bakeries as well as to government corruption.
Sudan is well known for its fertile agricultural land which has been estimated to be between 200 -250 million feddans. In spite of that the Sudanese government imported wheat from abroad.
During the last few years, prior to the mass uprising, the government cut the wheat import by half. This led to a shortage of bread in public bakeries. Such shortage led to the public mass protest which causing the removal President Al Bashir and the emerging of a military council to run the country. Al Bashir is presently under investigation for having $127 million in cash hidden in his house.
The protest movement referred to as “the power of freedom and change” continued its protest for nearly eight months until an agreement was reached with the military council to share authority for the next thirty-nine month. A free democratic election will follow after the elapse of the thirty-nine months and a new parliament will be established thus creating a new democratic society.
The agreement between the military council and the power for freedom and change of8/17/2019 reflects the following:
  •  A new council with national authority will be created to include 6 civilians and 5 members of the military council whose authority will last no more than 39 months.
  • The leadership of the freedom and change appointed a new prime minister who will in turn appoint 20 ministers to run the governmental affairs, until a new election takes place by the end of the 39 months.
Following the 39 months, Sudan will be run by a civilian and free democratic government.
